Networking for Remote Workers

Networking for Remote WorkersNetworking for Remote WorkersOne of the benefits of working in an office is the people. Every day, you are exposed to a variety of similarly-minded professionals from whom you can learn and grow. However, when you telecommute or are a remote worker, its easy to become isolated. Here are a few ways to keep your networking efforts up to par when you dont have the crutch of encountering new colleagues as a matter of course.Join a Third-Party AssociationScout out the industry organizations in your field and become a member. Attend their events and conferences, and volunteer to help organize activities. Youll learn more about your business while simultaneously building your contact database.Start a Meetup GroupMeetup.com is a terrific way to get acquainted with other local remote workers, share war stories, and pool resources. Its also nice to have a group with whom you can go out for the occasional happy hourHold BrainstormsUse your home office or living room as the launch pad for a gathering of influential peers to discuss current issues and events in your field. Arrange to meet monthly, and select a theme to keep the conversation and insights focused. These events reinforce relationships that may be mostly virtual and help you stay relevant in a world thats constantly evolving.Do at Least One Touch-Base Each WeekWhether you need work now or not, call or email contacts periodically to see whats new in their lives and businesses. A great excuse to touch-base is a contacts birthday. While they may get a hundred Facebook greetings, youll stand out as one of the other people who calls. Youd be surprised at the opportunities that unexpectedly arise from these types of informal interactions.Remote workers, what else do you do to stay plugged in?

Developing and Verifying Deepwater Offshore Wind Turbines

Developing and Verifying Deepwater Offshore Wind Turbines Developing and Verifying Deepwater Offshore Wind Turbines Alternative energy sources are making an impact in the U.S., and wind power is becoming a bigger player in electricity production. According to the U.S. Energy Information Administration, wind turbines accounted for 30 percent of new generating capacity over the past five years. That has come from land-cousined units, primarily in the interior of the country. But offshore wind turbines are poised for growth, and the industry expects them to move farther offshore, in deep water that requires floating platforms. For now, only a handful of floating wind turbines have been installed around the world and designers have moved on developing new modeling tools to ensure their integrity and stability. Its a progression from known to more difficult and future concepts, says Walter Musial, principle engineer at the U.S. Department of Energys National Renewable Energy Laboratory in Golden, CO. Were building on land-based turbine modeling tools. We had simulation tools to predict wind turbine wertmiger zuwachs as long as the base wasnt moving. For shallow waters of 40 meters or less, wind turbines can be economically installed on a variety of firm foundations fixed to the ocean floor. Going deeper requires floating platforms loosely anchored to the seabed with chains. Oil and gas producers have built very large tension-leg platforms and other designs for drilling and processing but wind turbines present different issues. For a 6-MW machine, a platform must maintain stability while supporting a tower reaching 80 meters and topped with a nacelle and rotor weighing 350 tonnes or more.VolturnUS is the first grid-connected offshore wind turbine in the Americas. Image Advanced Structures and Composites Center That all adds complexity, says Habib Dagher, director of the University of Maines Advanced Structures and Composite Center and leader of DeepCwind, a commercia l consortium to develop a floating wind farm off the coast of Maine. In 2013, the consortium successfully built, floated, and tested a 18 pilot model of a 6-MW wind turbine off of Castile, ME. We had to couple wave loading and hydrodynamics with structural and aerodynamic forces. To move forward, engineers must verify and validate the work in putting together new platform designs, and those designs are not uniform. In Norway, energy giant Statoil began testing a 2.3-MW wind turbine in the North Sea, using a spar platform. A spar is a cylindrical buoy-type platform filled with ballast ad extending deep beneath the waves for stability. An advanced spar design is also being used off Fukushima, Japan, serving as the platform for a floating electrical substation in the first stages what could be a 1,000-MW wind farm. Daghers group uses a three-column semisubmersible platform made of prestressed concrete with a lightweight composite tower. Seattle-based Principal Power has partnered with energy developer DeepWind to bring Principal Powers WindFloat design to the U.S. West Coast. The WindFloat design uses three steel columns tied together with steel truss members. The turbine tower is attached to one of the columns, all of which are fitted with a large water entrapment plate at the base to provide stability. In addition, the hulls trim optimization system uses instruments and sensors to measure ocean currents, wind direction and speed and other data, all of which are relayed to a control system that pumps ballast water among the columns to maintain stability. NREL took its first step toward verifying and validating floating structures with its OC3 (Offshore Code Comparison Collaboration 3) project, addressing the need to verify modeling tools, using a Statoil-designed spar as a subject. That was followed by OC4, which analyzed a 5-MW wind turbine attached to a semisubmersible platform using DeepCwinds design. Compared to the spar, the semisubmersible offered greater hydrodynamic complexity. Its a progression from known to more difficult and future concepts, says Musial. NREL now is beginning work on OC5, which Musial calls a validation phase. We had to make sure design tools for all wind systems were verified, he says, and there was confidence in simulation tools. ASME, which is working to develop standards for verification and validation, considers verification as the process of determining that a computational model accurately represents the underlying mathematical model and its solution. Validation is the process of determining the degree to which a model is an accurate representation of the real world from the perspective of the intended uses of the model. NRELs work builds on its um ein haar model, which the laboratory describes as joining aerodynamics models, hydrodynamics models for offshore structures, control and electrical system (servo) dynamics models, and structural (elastic) dynamics models to enable coupled nonlinear aero-hydro-s ervo-elastic simulation in the time domain. But FAST is not the only model. Dagher says his group used and modified FAST, together with four in-house and commercial modeling tools in developing their platform. They also worked with 150 scaled platforms and turbines in basin tests before building the 18 scale model. During a year of testing, the group gathered a large amount of data gathered from instruments and sensors that measured ocean currents, waves, wind direction and speed, acceleration, forces of thrust on the turbine, and other items. Our ability to model is no longer an issue, he says. We took that data and compared it to our modelsand our ability to predict is no longer a concern. Still, more work is coming as the wind industry grows. Although not specifically tied to offshore production, DOE is beginning a research initiative called Atmosphere to Electrons, or Ae2, toward more formal procedures for verification and validation procedures. One NREL engineer says researcher s will likely consider more quantitative approaches in the future. Learn more at ASMEs 2015 Verification and Validation Symposium in Las Vegas, NV. For Further Discussion Our ability to model is no longer an issue. And our ability to predict is no longer a concern.Prof. Habib Daghe, University of Maine

Investing money for beginners What you need to know first

Investing money for beginners What you need to know firstInvesting money for beginners What you need to know firstAs you start saving and building a financial foundation, youll need to start investing that money. If you really want to obtain wealth and secure a solid nest-egg, investing your money is crucial. And most people understand that investing their money is smart and valuable to their future plans of retiring. However, there is no definite class in the education system called Investing Money for Beginners.Least, bedrngnis something Im aware of currently.Follow Ladders on FlipboardFollow Ladders magazines on Flipboard covering Happiness, Productivity, Job Satisfaction, Neuroscience, and moreBut, you can learn how to do the basics on your own and learn how to put your money to work for you while you sleep.Even if you might be intimidated by investing money or scared to lose it all, its important to not let all your money just sit on the sidelines. Before you dive into any sort of i nvesting, there are some important items you need to know first before doing anything. These are not tips for how to get started, more of a checklist of things to understand. You should have money saved first thats not for investingYou never want to go all in with investing money, even if you think its foolproof (nothing is). This means, you should have a nice cash reserve set aside in your bank account, preferably a mix of your checking and savings. This is what youd call anemergency fundor your rainy day fund.Build behauptung up first, typically 3-6 months of expenses (I aimed for 6 12 months), before considering investing.Of course, if your company offers a 401k, take advantage of the company match. But outside of that, save your money first before doing any additional investing.Get your investing literacy onId say a key component to investing money for beginners is to educate yourself on investing. It doesnt mean you need to be the nextWarren Buffett, but you should understand how i nvesting works.Start learning about investing money, commoninvesting terms, what to look for, how the stock market works, etc. There is a lot of information out there, but if you start to slowly digest it youll see thats its not overly complicated. This does mean spending some time reading books and other trusted publications a bit each week. But if you have no background at all with investing money, this is probably the most important item.Pay off high interest debt beforeAgain, if your company offers a 401k with a match, still take advantage of that. But before investing any money, take care of any high interest debt, like credit cards. Many credit cards have 20%+ interest rates, which no investment will beat.Instead of pro-longing this debt and trying to invest, just knock it out.Youll feel better having taken care of this debt, youll still have your 401k started, and then youll have more money to save (or for future investments) since you wont have any high interest eating your cash. Only risk what wont crush your financesIf you recall from early in this post, I mention about building a savings foundation first that is not used for investing. However, even the money you use after that for investing, you still want to understand your risk.If something were to go bad with your investments or the economy, what can you afford to lose without being decimated financially? This is important because you never want to risk putting all your cash in investments.Instead you want to be calculated with your investment strategy. Its okay to be on the aggressive side if thats your path, but understand the stakes and ensure you wont be left with nothing if something happens.Getting rich overnight should not be your priority for investingWe all want to get rich overnight. Can you imagine?Ah, how exciting life would beHowever, it is the wrong mentality to have when you are investing money.Sure, sometimes a big investing win can happen, but its rare. How do you think Warren Buffett beca me a multi-billionaire?Besides being smart, he welches patience and approached investing money with the long-term mentality. The get rich fast mindset is typically why people end up losing a lot, or most of their money. Many seasoned investors understand this, but many beginners to investing see dollars way too quickly. Its okay to make small investing mistakesEven the best investors in the world make mistakes from time to time. The goal is to ensure they are only small mistakes, which provide great learning opportunities and lessons. If youd look back at my Vanguard snapshot from 2014-2016, it was all over the place and there were some mistakes I made which cost me money.Did it make me broke?Nope. Was I stressing when I lost some of my investment?Nope. Why?Because I didnt go all in on something I was still learning about. These mistakes were all a great education for me, which helped when I had more money to invest.Understand why you want to investI think its always important to know why y ou want to invest your money.Essentially, write down some goals for yourself that might be in 5, 10, 25 years. This helps you visualize why youre investing, helps you make better decisions when it comes to what to invest in, and helps keep you on track. Before I started (besides my 401k) a few years back, I wrote down what I wanted to accomplish and why investing in particular assets was important to my finances. While it may not have guided every decision, it was helpful to know before dropping any money. It was also helpful for making adjustments to my 401k and the amount I contributed.Dont underestimate the simple power of goals and planning for investing. Some additional tips for investing beginnersWhile the above are things to know before investing you money, there are additional tips as you get started as well.Keep these in mind as you get started.Consistently Contribute Stick to a consistent investing schedule, even when the market is up or down. This is called dollar-cost averagin g and when compounded overtime, it will ensure your investments average out well in the future.Spot investing fees When choosing your investment platforms or working with a bank for a loan, always be mindful of the fees.Choose financial platforms with low fees and negotiate bank fees as best you can.Even a small percentage can impact your future investments by a significant portion.Diversification is your friend Kind of like not going all in with your money, you shouldnt go all in on one particular asset either.Diversifying your assets will help your ride out rough markets better and help protect your money in the long run.Dont monitor your investments daily If you arent becoming a day trader or financial advisor, you should not be looking at your investments daily. It will drive you nuts, play with your emotions, and cause you to make hasty decisions based on the market that day.Of course, you want to check in once and awhile, but keep it limited.Starting out, you may want to start at 1x month or less. This article originally appeared on Invested Wallet. You might also enjoyNew neuroscience reveals 4 rituals that will make you happyStrangers know your social class in the first seven words you say, study finds10 lessons from Benjamin Franklins daily schedule that will double your productivityThe worst mistakes you can make in an interview, according to 12 CEOs10 habits of mentally strong people

Dont Let Social Media Disrupt Your Financial Reporting Standards

Dont Let Social Media Disrupt Your Financial Reporting StandardsDont Let Social Media Disrupt Your Financial Reporting StandardsYour companys social media usage may seem like one of the last issues that influences your internal controls over financial reporting. But social media channels like Facebook and Twitter now represent some of the fastest and most reliable ways to communicate with the public. Most organizations have created branded profiles to broadcast information to their followers and engage them.Things get tricky when it comes to sharing berichterstattung via social media, however, especially when it relates to financial information. For years, the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) has enforced Regulation Fair Disclosure rules, which require publicly traded companies to disclose information that would be deemed relevant for investors in nondiscriminatory ways.In the past, most organizations have relied on tools such as press releases to share quarterly financi al reports. But as social media outlets play more prominent roles in publishing news, its important to maintain a firm grasp of your internal controls over financial reporting. You may be inadvertently violating regulations on what seems like a routine or harmless click of a button.New responsibilities for companiesIn 2013, the SEC updated Regulation Fair Disclosure to stipulate that businesses can broadcast financial information on social media channels, but only if investors are notified prior to publication and understand thats where they need to go to retrieve the information. This means chief financial officers (CFOs) and managers have new responsibilities to regulate their financial reporting standards. Its important to establish companywide guidelines and train employees on how to use these tools in accordance with federal regulations. The 2014 Internal Audit Capabilities and Needs Survey from global consulting firm Protiviti found that 74 percent of companies surveyed use soc ial media for external communication, yet only 55 percent of those organizations have developed internal social media strategies.Risks to posting on social mediaYour business has a lot at stake posting information on social media platforms. CFOs and managers who are unaware of the nuances associated with financial reporting standards and online communication may be putting their entire companies at risk of lawsuits and noncompliance penalties.Need to think criticallyOne way you can avoid regulatory compliance issues is to assess whether social media is the most effective channel for your audience. Some financial reports require a significant level of context and supplementary information, meaning a 140-character post on Twitter may not be useful to investors.Thats not to say social media channels cant serve as effective gateways to that information. For example, Compliance Week reported the SEC will not take issue with Twitter posts that include hyperlinks to additional information. Its just important to understand the details of the regulations ahead of time. 17 Tips for Writing Your SES Resume

17 Tips for Writing Your SES Resume17 Tips for Writing Your SES ResumeSeventeen Tips from a CDP Executive Review Board for Writing Your SES CDP ResumeBy Kathryn Troutman and Diane Hudson, Authors, The New SES Application Seventeen tips may seem like a lot for writing your Senior Executive Service (SES) Candidate Development Program (CDP) resume, Executive Core Qualification (ECQs) statements, and Technical Qualifications (TQs). However, this application package is a lengthy, specific, and detailed. The more tips you can gather and incorporate into your application package, the better. Some CDP announcements received hundreds and even thousands of applications. As such, the resume and written narratives need to be highly competitive for these coveted CDP positions, which can lead to your ECQs being certified by Office of Personnel Management. You will then have the opportunity to then apply for Senior Executive Service (SES) positions with only a resume and TQs going forward. This upf ront homework is paramount in the process of developing a CDP resume package. Here are seventeen suggestions from a CDP Executive Review Board to help you develop a stellar CDP resume package, edited by Kathryn Troutman and Diane Hudson, co-authors of The New SES ApplicationWrite tightly and concisely. Read the announcement in its entirety and follow the rules for the required resume length for an application. For example, the Air Force SES federal resume is four pages. If the length of the resume is bedrngnis specified, do your best to keep the SES CDP resume around five pages.Feature your highest level of accomplishments within the past five years. Your current position and second most recent position should be the longest in length in the resume. As you move back in your chronology, the descriptions of your duties and accomplishments should be shorter. This format will help you keep the resume to about five pages.Be sure that the resume states and demonstrates how you have met the mission of your agency. Speak to the mission of the agency in your resume and across your accomplishments.Includea short profile for the top of the resume, not to exceed 8 to 10 lines. It needs to be short and powerful, grabbing the attention of the reader. Use active verbs and tie the language to your accomplishments. Instead of saying Excellent communicator in writing and orally, say Communicate with senior level leadership internally and stakeholders externally leading to signed agreement for multi-million dollar program implementation. Tell what you do and how you apply your expertise.Use active voice verbs that represent leadership, agency-level programs, innovation, first-time program launches, high-level expertise, decisiveness, creativity, resiliency, and customer service. We included many active voice keywords in The New SES Application on pages 71 to 81.Analyze the keywords from the technical qualifications and specialized experience in the announcement and integrate the keywords into your resume.Use leadership language. Do not use the following words in your SES CDP resume tasked with helped with assisted with participated in duties include perform duties as team member while serving as or other similar passive language.Your CDP resume should match your ECQs. The resume should include short bullet statements that describe the stories used in the ECQs. The resume should support the ECQs.Include your relevant and recent education, training, awards, presentations, conferences attended, articles/publications, committee memberships, board memberships, and certifications.Add important and relevant non-profit activities, board memberships and outside interests to the resume. These entries could help you to stand out against your competition.Limit the use of personal pronoun I. You can use the personal pronoun I limited in accomplishments, as personal narrative statements of success. Do write using first person narrative in the ECQs and TQs.Do not include quotes from supervisors or accolades by others. You have to prove your good works by performance, not quotes.Do not include paragraphs or long sentences with historical or philosophical statements before each accomplishment. Just write the accomplishment. If some background is needed, add it into the accomplishment statement.Do not overwrite with processes that you followed to achieve the goal. Include three or four administrative steps, but no more. New study Limiting social media use benefits mental health

New study Limiting social media use benefits mental health New study Limiting social media use benefits mental health How many minutes (erm, hours) a day do you spend on Instagram, Facebook, Snapchat and more? And how does that powerful vortex of social media tend to make you feel? If it leaves you more lonely and depressed than connected and motivated, you’re not alone. In fact, the  first causal study conducted at the University of Pennsylvania  just proved that this negative relationship exists - and that limiting your exposure can benefit your mental health significantly. In  the study, which will be published in December’s  Journal of Social and Clinical Psychology, researchers recruited 143 college students between the ages of 18 and 22 for two trials - one completed in the spring term and the other completed in the fall. All participants were required to have an iPhone and accounts on Instagram, Facebook and Snapchat.  The researchers first monitored the students for a week to get a snapshot of their typical social media use. They also gave them questionnaires to assess their well-being relating to social support, a fear of missing out (FOMO), loneliness, autonomy and self-acceptance, anxiety, depression and self-esteem.Then, for the next three weeks of both trials, the participants were separated into two groups. The first group continued their typical use of Instagram, Facebook and Snapchat while the second group spent only 10 minutes on each platform each day (a maximum of 30 minutes). At the end of the trials when evaluations were recorded, it was clear that less time spent on social media led to better mental health.“Using less social media than you normally would leads to significant decreases in both depression and loneliness, ”  lead study author Melissa G. Hunt said in a statement. “These effects are particularly pronounced for folks who were more depressed when they came into the study.”The study does  come with its limitations, however. For instance, since the researchers only monitored students’  phone activity, they can’t guarantee that the participants didn’t sneak onto Facebook and Instagram on their laptops at some point in the trials. It also wasn’t inclusive of all social media platforms, leaving out big players like Twitter and Pinterest. Beyond these components, we now need to see what happens when the trial length is extended beyond a few weeks and over a larger, more diverse sample size because those adjustments could reveal unique shifts as well.On the positive side, it’s worth noting that the study didn’t ask any student to abandon social media altogether because that’s simply unrealistic at this point in our digitally connected society. The goal wasn’t to remove these environmental factors entirely, but rather to see what happens when you are mindful of how much time you engage with them. And the results give us hope that if we set reasonable time limits on ourselves when it comes to swiping, scrolling and posting, we would probably feel that much more content with our lives and ourselves. Now, let’s put our phones down and go out for a cup of coffee (no Insta stories of latte art allowed). This  post  was originally published on  Swirled.com  in the Thrive section, which covers valuable career and personal finance content for Millennials.

Prepare Yourself for a Media Job Interview

Prepare Yourself for a Media Job Interview Prepare Yourself for a Media Job Interview A media job interview is the chance to dazzle a prospective boss with your background, skills, and ambition. But it also requires a great deal of homework in advance so that youll be the one whos offered the position and not become the victim of a bad job interview. Prepare yourself for a media job interview and stand out from your competition. Simply know what types of questions youll be asked so that youre ready to sell yourself effectively and have time to ask your own questions. Learn About the Boss Before Your Media Job Interview This gives you a quick way to break the ice and calm your nerves. Use the Internet to find out her previous positions, where shes lived and any media awards shes won. Maybe you can compliment the photo of her poodle you notice on her desk- anything to avoid awkward silence. People enjoy talking about themselves. This will get the interview started on a more informal note and let you see whether your potential boss is all business or enjoys some small talk. If theres an interest you share or other connection, mention it. Even if its as simple as saying youve lived in the same state, its enough to get the conversation going. Know the Background of the Company Most potential bosses are wary of job applicants whove applied everywhere and couldnt care less which job they get. By learning the background of the media company, you show that youve done some research and are eager to know more about the position than just what it pays. The New York Times and the New York Post are two newspapers that cover the Big Apple, yet their approaches are very different. You should be aware of whether the company is traditional or cutting-edge. That will dictate how you dress and how you should conduct yourself. A start-up company might give you chances for faster advancement, though there might be risks the operation wont survive. A generations-old media outlet may have more layers of management and structure, but it might offer more stability and long-term benefits. Study Current Events It doesnt matter if youre applying to be a Top 40 radio announcer or a local TV reporter, you will be expected to know the latest information about your industry. Some media managers even present pop quizzes to interviewees to test their knowledge. Depending on the position, find out whats going on in Congress, on the concert scene or at the latest electronics show. Even if youre not asked directly about current events, youll be able to bring them up in the conversation to show you keep up with the news. If the job opportunity is in another city or state, check out the local news website to get a feel for the issues of the area. Media managers want their new hires to hit the ground running and knowing about the mayor or local sports team never hurts. Expect to Have Your Skills Tested You may be asked to do more than recite what you know about current events. An applicant for a writing position may be handed some copy and given 15 minutes to re-write it into an article. Dont panic. Your writing was good enough to get you an interview, so someone had to like it. Your worry may be about writing creatively. But what may be tested is your ability to write clear, understandable sentences with correct punctuation. Whether youre a magazine photographer or an on-air personality, if asked to perform on the spot, make sure you demonstrate your mastery of the basics. You will learn about the companys style after you are hired. Be Prepared to Talk About Your Current Job Its inevitable that youll be asked about your current job and why you want to leave. You may be tempted to say you hate the long hours, low pay and your obnoxious co-workers. While that may be true, its better to answer this question more cautiously. Theres nothing wrong with saying you want new challenges or that you desire to learn new skills. Make whatever you say sound positive. Its common in the media industry for employees to want to move up to bigger markets, experience a new city and work for the top media outlets. If you simply want to further your media career, just say so in the media job interview. However, if you take a swipe at your current company or boss, that negativity can leave the interviewer concerned that you may be a problem employee. Who knows? She may be best friends with your current boss and your words may come back to hurt you. Be Candid If You're Out of Work In media, being out of work is a consequence of a competitive industry. It happens to most of us and may have even happened to your prospective boss at one time. If you were laid off, theres no shame in saying so. In these economic times, supervisors are well aware of the new focus on the bottom line and cost-cutting mandates when revenue doesnt meet projections. If you were terminated for another reason, be honest about the circumstances without revealing every detail. Theres no need to drag down the interview with a long-winded explanation of your situation. Saying that your company was bought out and the new owners wanted a change of direction may be all thats needed. Decide How Much of a Commitment You're Willing to Make You might think a media manager loves hiring new employees. Truth is, most would rather keep the people they have and build their skills rather than start from scratch with a new face. Thats why you may be asked what kind of commitment youre ready to make to the company. A boss doesnt want a here-today-and-gone-tomorrow worker. You need to say youll be there two years, minimum. The first year will be taken up by training, which gives you one year to be a solid producer. If you can honestly say you want to be there longer, emphasize that youre willing to sign a long-term contract. Youre giving your boss the peace of mind knowing that she wont have to repeat this process for a while. Anticipate Probing Questions Some potential bosses will go beyond the standard questions to try to find out more about you. What was the last book you read? or What was the biggest mistake you ever made? are sometimes asked. While its impossible to predict what you might face, prepare yourself for probing questions. Consider why you want to work for this company, in this position, and what goals you want to accomplish. The answers can be part of what you tell the interviewer. A few bosses may be trying to trip you up to test your grace under fire. After all, if youre applying for a reporting job, youll have to use this same skill set to ask tough questions during your own interviews. But the majority of potential bosses just want to get to know you. Youll find the anxiety you may feel will ease when you realize that theyre taking a risk with anyone they hire and that you both want to make the correct decision and have a happy, productive future.

Navy NEC Codes - Sonar Technician

Navy NEC Codes - Sonar Technician Navy NEC Codes - Sonar Technician The Navy Sonar Technician is highly trained in electronics and acoustics of ships, submarines, and oceanographic issues. Interpreting data received from sensitive sonar equipment and sub-surface fire control systems is the main responsibility of the sonar technician. Whether on ship or submarine, the sonar technician is critical to the safety and mission capability of the vessel and crew. The Navy Enlisted Classification (NEC) system supplements the enlisted rating structure in identifying personnel on active or inactive duty and billets in manpower authorizations. NEC codes identify a non-rating wide skill, knowledge, aptitude, or qualification that must be documented to identify both people and billets for management purposes. For example, if a Navy police officer ( MA Master at Arms ) receives specialized training as a K-9 Dog Handler, he/she would be awarded NEC MA-2005. From that point on, the sailor could be assigned to Navy law enforcement duties involving military working dogs. Law School Admissions Tips to Help You Stand Out

Law School Admissions Tips to Help You Stand Out Law School Admissions Tips to Help You Stand Out A survey conducted by Kaplan Test Prep revealed that the quality of the law school applicant pool is increasing, making law school admissions more competitive than ever even though the number of applicants has declined. Getting into law school is not easy. Admissions decisions are based largely on two criteria: your undergraduate grade point average (GPA) and your LSAT score. Youll have to find a way to enhance your applicant profile and set yourself apart from other candidates if your application is weak in either of these areas. Your Personal Statement Your personal statement or application essay is an important component of your law school admissions profile. Law schools want to see a concise, well-written statement that conveys a compelling story. Your story should demonstrate your potential to succeed in law school and set you apart from other candidates. Extracurricular Activities Law schools look favorably upon activities that demonstrate the qualities that are necessary to succeed as a lawyer. These include leadership abilities, motivation, self-discipline, advocacy, and writing ability. Mention your participation in student government, on the debate team, the student newspaper, and other organizations and emphasize any leadership roles you played. Letters of Recommendation Letters of recommendation from college professors, employers, or others who can attest to your academic and personal achievements can also enhance your chances of law school admission. Recommendations should be written by individuals who have had an opportunity to carefully evaluate you over a somewhat extended period of time. Work Experience Law-related work experience can demonstrate your commitment to a legal career. Even if your work experience isnt law-related, you might have performed functions relevant to the legal field, or maybe you developed skills and talents that transfer well to the field of law. Advanced Degrees Advanced degrees or coursework that attest to your ability to succeed in a competitive post-graduate program can help predict academic success in law school. Public Service The value of volunteer experience for law school cant be overlooked. Law school admissions committees look for applicants with a commitment to public responsibility and community service. A history of volunteer work or community service evidences your potential to make a contribution to society and to the legal profession. Personal Hardship Overcoming personal hardship, such as physical, cultural, economic, mental, or linguistic obstacles, can also help indicate future success in the legal field. It can explain past academic difficulties. Explain if and how youve persevered in the face of adversity. Significant Personal Accomplishments Special talents and achievements help set you apart from other candidates. Professional distinctions such as awards and publications can enhance your law school admissions profile, so be sure to include them. A Minority Background Law school admissions committees want a talented and diverse student body, so membership in a disadvantaged racial, ethnic, or economic group is another consideration in determining if youll be selected for admission. All law schools actively seek students who are members of minority groups, and they strongly encourage minority applicants to apply, according to the Law School Admissions Council. Your Skills and Ability Admissions committees also look for evidence of the types of skills that are necessary to succeed in law school and to successfully practice as a lawyer. These include communication, logical reasoning, analytical discernment, problem solving, and time-management skills. Personal Qualities Tout any personal qualities you possess that predict success in the competitive law school environment and in legal practice. Desirable personal traits include motivation, intellectual curiosity, self-discipline, and industry, as well as characteristics such as integrity, sound character, and judgment.

These popular coffee species are currently facing extinction

These popular coffee species are currently facing extinction These popular coffee species are currently facing extinction Science Advances reports that climate change and deforestation are pushing a variety of popular coffee species toward extinction. Deforestation, disease, human encroachment, and global warming make course correction quite the uphill battle and conservation measures may not be enough to protect the wild coffee species for too much longer.“As temperatures increase and rainfall decreases â€" the suitable area for growing … diminishes,” says Aaron Davis, the head of coffee research at Kew.Many popular commercial coffees, like Arabica and Robusta, will be gravely affected if urgent action isn’t implemented in countries hit hardest by climate change. Madagascar and Tanzania are just a few of the forested areas most impacted and the prognosis is steadily worsening. Unfortunately, it won’t just be coffee left decimated in the wake of this phenomenon, but the earnings of the 100 million people producing coffee all around the world, particularly Ethiopia.“It’s a tragedy losing an y wild species, whether it’s a bird or plant or animal, that’s bad enough,” said Davis. “But when you’ve got a crop that supports the livelihoods of 100 million people just in production in coffee farming, then you look at the value of high street coffee chains and supermarket coffee, it’s enormous.”Ethiopia is coffees largest exporter, as it accounts for an annual export value of $1 billion. With computer modeling, researchers were able to predict that areas that farm the at-risk species to decrease by about 85%. Of the 75 coffee species that made the threatened list, 15 are classified as critically endangered. The rise in temperature will make pests more prevalent which will, in turn, increase the use of pesticides.Even the mildest change in climate will dramatically alter the quality of arabica coffee â€" a plant more vulnerable than most to environmental fluctuations.  This will inevitably introduce the need to farm the plant somewhere more conducive to growth.   The last domino to fall will be the coffee industry in the United States. Consumers could very easily find themselves paying a lot more for much lower quality in the proceeding decades.“If you start to lose these species the options for developing resilient coffee for the future diminishes very rapidly,” Davis AddedFor now, seed banks, plant collections, and increased conservation in the natural environment are the best we can do to support Africa in his fight to preserve one of its most profitable resources.

Entrepreneurial Strategies To Revitalize Your Business

Entrepreneurial Strategies To Revitalize Your Business Entrepreneurial Strategies To Revitalize Your Business Entrepreneurial Strategies To Revitalize Your Business Martin Does it feel like your business is in a state of malaise? Are sales stalled in a recessionary muck? Instead of passively waiting for an economic turnaround, you can help revitalize your business right now by adopting these five strategies embraced by accomplished entrepreneurs. A newly published book, The Risk Takers: 16 Women and Men Share Their Entrepreneurial Strategies for Success, profiles high-achieving entrepreneurs and highlights 10 broad strategies theyve employed to beat the competition and stay on top. Five of these strategies are particularly valuable in channeling your creativity to develop new products and expand your customer base. 1.Go on a treasure hunt and find an underserved niche. Take a good, hard look at your business operations. Is there some way you can parlay your companys existing expertise and resources to create new, more specialized products and services? Is there an underserved niche you could be targeting? You might take a lesson from David L. Steward, founder of World Wide Technology, a giant in the information technology field. Today, WWTs annual revenue approaches $3 billion. But years before he launched WWT, Steward acquired a small consulting business which audited freight bill charges. Most of the companys contracts involved auditing overcharges for customers of railroad freight services. Three years later, he tapped an underserved niche that nobody else had spotted identifying undercharges for the railroad companies. The railroads were losing revenue because of the undercharges.Other companies provided overcharge services informing railroad customers when they were charged too much, but nobody had ever worked the other side of the equation. He developed new electronic auditing processes that prompted Union Pacific Railroad to hire his company to audit three years worth of freight bills $15 billion worth of rate information for a single client. 2.Spot a new trend and pounce. Often, a shift in cultural or economic trends will create new opportunities for product development or sales and marketing. Sometimes that shift arises from advances in technology or media. Think of the start-up software developers that have gained a foothold by developing applications for smartphones. Tova Borgnines direct-marketing beauty products company catalog orders were stagnant. Her company needed a new, effective source to jumpstart sales if she was going to survive. She spotted a new trend women forsaking malls to instead shop from their sofas with the new cable-shopping networks. Borgnine lobbied for an appearance on cable TVs fledgling QVC network. The bold move worked. The glamorous Borgnine became one of the networks most popular pitch women. She saw sales of Tova Corporations beauty products skyrocket. Borgnine had identified a new, robust sales and marketing channel for her products, one she simply couldnt cultivate in the pages of a catalog, and pounced before her competitors did. The Tova brand became so successful that QVC eventually bought the company from Borgnine for an eight-figure price. 3.Hit em where they aint. An old baseball sluggers adage simply put set your sights on places where theres no formidable competitors. This is one of the strategies that helped catapult Curves from a small womens gym in Texas to a global multi-billion-dollar fitness empire. Curves was launched in 1992, when Gary and Diane Heavin spent their entire $10,000 in savings to open a womens fitness center in Harlingen, Texas. Curves targeted an underserved niche: middle-aged and elderly women who needed a non-threatening place to finally get in good physical shape. After a second gym location and earnings reaching $250,000, Heavin decided to launch a Curves franchise system in small towns which had been ignored by the expensive, glitzy chains. His model small, no-frills operation worked even in sparsely populated areas that couldnt support more elaborate setups. Curves fitness centers fit perfectly within the confines of modestly sized storefront retail spaces found in any small-town shopping district or corner strip mall. So Heavin positioned his franchisees to hit em where they aint.Today, of course, Curves is everywhere. There are nearly 10,000 locations in 73 countries. 4.Save your bucks and get noticed without expensive advertising. You may not have the money right now to launch an advertising campaign for your business, but that doesnt mean you cant promote your brand. Use your imagination to separate your company from the pack. Robert Stephens, founder of Geek Squad, was a master at this strategy. For years, he had no marketing budget for his Minnesota-based home-computer repair service. But he did have an offbeat sense of humor and an active imagination. He made certain the companys quirky identity got people talking. When Stephens bought the first company car, a 1958 French-manufactured Simca Aronde, he dubbed it the Geekmobile and painted a giant Geek Squad logo on the door panels. The car was an eye-catching moving billboard. Since Stephens knew affluent people were more likely to use his companys services, he sometimes drove to cultural events such as orchestra performances and circled the block while attendees milled about outside the venue. Before long, Geek Squad was fielding customer calls from some of the wealthiest neighborhoods in the Twin Cities area. Stephens eventually sold the company to Best Buy for millions. 5.Exploit your competitors weakness and make it your strength. The sharpest entrepreneurs have a knack for viewing the world from the perspective of their customers. That quality can help identify competitors vulnerabilities and shortcomings. When Mal Mixon acquired Invacare, a wheelchair manufacturing company, in the early 80s, there was already a gorilla competitor that controlled 80% of the worlds wheelchair market. How do you overtake a gorilla? First, you discover your competitors weakness in this case, it was delivery times and make it your strength. Mixon recognized that when personal mobility is at stake, providers and their customers want a quick turnaround. He expanded his companys warehousing system across the country to speed deliveries to only one day after order placement. A series of other initiatives making Invacare more attractive followed.Since acquiring Invacare three decades ago at the age of 39, the company has grown its annual sales from $19 million to $1.8 billion. Its never been easy to run your own business, and this economy certainly poses plenty of hurdles. But these five strategies will help you to create a competitive edge, using your own creative skills and commitment to succeed. Author Bios Don Martin epitomizes the rags-to-riches entrepreneur success story. Raised in poverty in a small town in the Ohio Valley, over the next four decades he founded and built the largest privately held insurance brokerage in California: Cal-Surance. Ranked in the top fifty of insurance brokerages in the U.S., Cal-Surance generated over $200 million in annual revenue. Renee Martin was a dynamic real estate broker when she switched careers entirely to work in community service as rape counselor, an advocate for The Childrens Court (CASA) and director of community relations of a child abuse crisis center. Renee and Don co-authored The Survival Guide for Women and she became a frequent and popular speaker at womens seminars across the country.
